From Lisa: The first week of school is over. It was only three days and I found them very difficult, trying to remember the language, fitting in all the guided discoveries, trying to write our hopes and dreams. But, as we progressed through the week, I gave the children an assignment. They all had to get e-mail accounts and I was trying to make sure they would be able to e-mail me when needed. So they had to e-mail me for homework. It was on day 2 and they were asked to write a few sentences about what they enjoyed during the first two days of school. I was surprised how many of them wrote about Responsive Classroom, without realizing that's what they were writing about. Here are some excerpts:
"The parts of school that I liked were making our name tags and learning the rules of the classroom."
"Did you make up the game called Cold Wind Blows? If you did, then that was a very good job of making up a game. Zoom was a great one too."
"I love the way we greet each other in the morning. It helps us to relate to each other during the day."
"These two days I've been hanging out with Karen. I have learned that she is a really nice girl to play with. Plus, we have a lot in common. For example, we both like the same T.V shows and channels!"
"I got to know the kids in our class more faster. I think I'll get more better at social skills in this school!"
From Lisa: We wrote our rules: Be Respectful of Yourself, the Environment, others
We discussed Rules and Logical Consequences
Students named the time-out area - The Relaxation Station and stocked it with crayons, drawing paper, lined paper, pencils, stress balls, and a poster of feelings
So why does it feel like they still don't get the rules and I'm still trying not to say unresponsive things? Guess it takes more than two weeks...hence the title, The First Six Weeks.
