I have gone through rules, we created our own, made posters for the three. We have spent time learning about CARES. Today we talk about consequences.

\nHere's the problem. I know how to handle a situation when one or two children aren't following the rules. But I don't know what to do when the whole class doesn't following the rules. For example, cleaning up from snack time. They are noisy, I spend time waiting for them to settle down, then I have to direct children back to areas to clean up messes. How do I get them to understand the rules we set up? How do I redirect the whole class?

\nI received this email from a friend, and now I am passing it on to all of you because you've all made a difference in my life in some way this summer. I was also thinking that this might make a great RC classroom project. Sue and I are going to try it a little later in the year with our students. We'll keep you posted how it turns out. \n"Who I Am Makes a Difference."

\nA teacher in New York decided to honor each of her
\nseniors in High School by telling them the difference
\neach of them had made. She called each student to the
\nfront of the class, one at a time.
\n
\nFirst, she told each of them how they had made a
\ndifference to her, and the class. Then she presented
\neach of them with a blue ribbon, imprinted with gold
\nletters, which read, "Who I Am Makes a Difference."
\n
\nAfterwards, the teacher decided to do a class project,
\nto see what kind of impact recognition would have on a
\nCommunity. She gave each of the students three more
\nblue ribbons, and instructed them to go out and spread
\nthis acknowledgment ceremony.
\n
\nThen they were to follow up on the results, see who
\nhonored whom, and report to the class in about a week.
\n
\nOne of the boys in the class went to a junior
\nexecutive in a nearby Company, and honored him for
\nhelping him with his career planning. He gave him a
\nblue ribbon, and put it on his shirt.
\n
\nThen he gave him two extra ribbons and said, "We're
\ndoing a class project on recognition, and we'd like
\nfor you to go out, find somebody to honor, give them a
\nblue ribbon, then give them the extra blue ribbon so
\n they can acknowledge a third person, to keep this
\nacknowledgment ceremony going. Then please report back
\nto me and tell me what happened."
\n
\nLater that day, the junior executive went in to see
\nhis boss, who had been noted, by the way, as being
\nkind of a grouchy fellow. He sat his boss down, and he
\ntold him that he deeply admired him for being a
\ncreative genius. The boss seemed very surprised. The
\njunior executive asked him if he would accept the gift
\nof the blue ribbon, and would he give him permission
\nto put it on him. His surprised boss said, "Well,
\nsure." The junior executive took the blue ribbon and
\nplaced it right on his boss's jacket, above his heart.
\nAs he gave him the last extra ribbon, he said, "Would
\nyou take this extra ribbon, and pass it on by honoring
\nsomebody else. The young boy who first gave me the
\nribbons is doing a project in school, and we want to
\nkeep this recognition ceremony going and find out how
\nit affects people."
\n
\nThat night, the boss came home to his 14-year-old son,
\nand sat him down. He said, "The most incredible thing
\nhappened to me today. I was in my office, and one of
\nthe junior executives came in and told me he admired
\nme, and gave me a blue ribbon for being a creative
\ngenius. Imagine! He thinks I am a creative genius!
\nThen he put a blue ribbon that says, "Who I Am Makes a
\nDifference," on my jacket above my heart. He gave me
\nan extra ribbon and asked me to find somebody else to
\nhonor. As I was driving home tonight, I started
\nthinking about whom I would honor with this ribbon,
\nand I thought about you. I want to honor you. My days
\nare hectic and when I come home, I do not pay a lot of
\nattention to you. Sometimes I scream at you for not
\ngetting good enough grades in school, and for your
\nbedroom being a mess. Somehow, tonight, I just wanted
\nto sit here and, well, just let you know that you do
\nmake a difference to me. Besides your mother, you are
\nthe most important person in my
\nlife. You're a great kid, and I love you!"
\n
\nThe startled boy started to sob and sob, and he could
\nnot stop crying His whole body shook. He looked up at
\nhis father and said through his tears,
\n
\n" Dad, earlier tonight I sat in my room and wrote a
\nletter to you and Mom, explaining why I had taken my
\nown life, and I asked you to forgive me. I was going to
\ncommit suicide tonight after you were asleep.
\n
\nI just did not think that you cared at all. The letter
\nis upstairs. I don't think I need it after all."
\n
\nHis father walked upstairs and found a heartfelt
\nletter full of anguish and pain.
\n
\nThe boss went back to work a changed man. He was no
\nlonger a grouch, but made sure to let all of his
\nemployees know that they made a difference.
\n
\nThe junior executive helped other young people with
\ncareer planning, and never forgot to let them know
\nthat they made a difference in his life...one being
\nthe boss' son. In addition, the young boy and his
\n classmates learned a valuable lesson, "Who you are
\nDOES make a difference."
\n
\nIf you want, you can send this to all of the people who
\nmean something to you, or send it to the one, two,
\nor three people who mean the most.
\n
\n
\nOn the other hand, just smile and know that I think
\nthat you are important, or you would not have received
\nthis in the first place. Who you are does make a
\ndifference, and I wanted you to know that.
\n
